B Bar Cattle is located in west-central Saskatchewan near Lucky Lake where three generations of Boons run the day-to-day operations. It is a mixed farm consisting of cropland, as well as an 100 head cow/calf operation.
Delaney Boon purchased his first Limousin cattle in 1982 from a neighbour. In 1987 he registered his first Limousin cattle and began learning the ropes of running a purebred operation. Through the years he consigned bulls and females to various sales such as the Central Limousin Classic Sale, High Yield Bull Sale, Agribition Limousin Sale, and AAA Limousin Club Sale. He also showed at Prince Albert Exhibition, Saskatoon Fall Fair, Manitoba Livestock Expo, and Canadian Western Agribition. Delaney was active on the Saskatchewan Limousin Association board for seven years including two years served as president. Delaney’s passion for raising Limousin cattle was instilled in his son Eric, and today they work together raising and promoting Limousin cattle.
In 2006, a lease agreement was drawn up with family friends, the Bohrsons, of Anchor B Limousin. With the High Yield Bull Sale no longer running and Eric off to university, this arrangement was an easy decision. During the years of the lease agreement, the cows remained at the farm, under Delaney and Eric’s management. Every fall the bulls were selected at weaning and sent over to Anchor B. Bohrsons developed them and marketed them through their annual bull sale every March. The heifer calves were picked between both parties at weaning as well. This allowed for the focus and improvement on the 40 cows that made up the lease agreement. Another bonus to the lease was it allowed the use of semen on bulls that Bohrsons had exclusive rights on. This included the use of ROMN Made To Order, a bull that has greatly influenced the B Bar cowherd. For five years, a great working relationship was developed with the Bohrsons and in the fall of 2011, Martin and Donna dispersed their cowherd which then terminated the lease agreement.
The current B Bar herd consists of 50 purebred Limousin cows. This group has been a closed herd for the past six years, although as you look through the cowherd you will notice all the 2007-2011 (T’s-Y’s) cows carry the Anchor B prefix and MBH tattoo. These cows were raised here and have never left the farm. Along with the Limousin cows we run 30 commercial cows that are used as recips for embryo transfer.
After 35 years of being a CLA member, B Bar Cattle has decided to start an annual production sale the fall of 2017. The sale offering will be held annually, Mid-December at Saskatoon Livestock Sales, Saskatoon, SK. It will consist of the current year bull calves, open and bred females and frozen genetics.
